Initial conditions for a mathematical system are any set of numerical values for the state variables. Starting from the initial conditions, the future state of the system may be determined from the mathematical expression characterizing the system.

In the case of dynamical systems one proceeds from the initial conditions to the future state of the system by integration. In the case of other mathematical systems one proceeds from the initial conditions to a subsequent state of the system by iteration.
