Cod

The work of a curious fellow

The Atlantic cod were once the most common fish in Casco Bay. Fortunes were made in cod from the 16th through the early 20th centuries. Finally fishing efficiency overwhelmed the cod's ability to reproduce and the stock collapsed. We found this group in the summer of 2005 but have not seen so many good sized cod since.

When cod are seen they are often in the company of pollock. Here we see a school of pollock followed by a pretty cod. We are in about 65 feet of water using the dipping camera.
