In the event of multiple mentions in the page year, most often the case, the first instance on that page is linked. The Alexander family were from Harpswell, ME where in 1913 Gram and Ben obtained a pair of boats and set up a fishing operation with Lyman and other Harpswell men doing the fishing and Ben picking up the catch they brought to Lisbon Falls, to peddle it around Bowdoin, Lewiston and Litchfield.

Remarks: Friend of Ben and Alice living in Lisbon Falls. There is no record that I could find of the Sear Allen that Gram refers to in the diary but the 1940 census shows that Evie Wentworth and Alice Higgins (Kinto) were lodgers with Frank and Priscilla Allen and Gram mentions that Kinto was staying at Sear's place so I suspect that Sear was a nickname for Frank H. Allen. Update: Found out in 1911 entries "Frank and Seer" that Seer was probably a nickname for Priscilla. Raymond Frank Allen and his brother George Osmond Allen married, respectively, Florence M. Harding and Gladys E. Walker, on November 28, 1916.

It is hard to get "Nettie" from that. In a conversation with June Wheeler, in May of 13, I found out that Laura J. (mentioned above) is Laura Jenette (Darling) Allen. The "Nettie" was short for Jenette.

Gramp Small's Cottage^A

Sometime, probably in the 1920s or 1930s, Grampa Small built a house on Orr's Island for Bernard Wilson in exchange for land on the back (east) shore of the Island, Tax map 35, probably lots 214, 216 and 218. He built three summer cottages on those lots over the years. The first and second were built before my time but I helped him build the third, southernmost, cottage as a pre-teenager. Uncle Leo took possession of that one after it was built. The middle cottage was the first built and was sold probably in the 1930s. The northernmost cottage was owned by Uncle Chester when I was growing up. That area of the back shore was home base for summer vacations for Grampa Small's whole family for many years.

Remarks: The Decovins were neighbors of the Waggs in Bowdoin. They boarded a girl named Dora Mann b~1902. In December of 1912 Mariette began to be identified by her initials (Med). I found out in the 1913 diary that Ben and Alice bought the Decovin place and moved there from the Brick House in September of that year. In about 1955 my father showed me the foudation of a burned out house in the woods northeast of what I now know as Starbird Corner. Father told me that was the house in which he was a child. I surmise that it may have been the Decovin place.

Doctor b~1860^A

There is a character known only as Doctor spelled Dr. He or she (in 19 teens probably he) first shows up in a May 3 1910 entry "Dr. & M." obviously coupled with Maud Randall, known as M. in the diary. At first I thought Dr. might be M.'s husband but when I finally found out the M. was Maud, Arthur George Randall turned out to be her husband. Maud had picked up a Dr. substitute for her husband for some reason but then there was a diary entry saying the Dr. and M. had gone to Thomaston to visit Arthur. Thomaston was the site on the Maine State Prison so we are left with the mysterious Dr., M. and her absent husband all together. After noticing another Doctor, Dr. F., unaccounted for, as well as a couple references to Mrs. F. I found by way of the census reports for 1910 that Maud and a general practice physician named Albert French and his wife Lida S. French lived only a few blocks apart in Lewiston. I surmise that Dr. and Dr. F. are the same person. Could be wrong but it seems a reasonable guess.

In spite of considerable scratching around in old documents I have not been able to pin these folks down further.

The Brick House^A

Remarks: The brick house was a brick dwelling in Bowdoin with a large (65 foot) shed attached, two barns and a sheep house, on 175 acres. In 1908 James E. Wagg traded, with the Grover family, his property on High St. in Lisbon Falls for the Brick House property. In 1910 Alice and Ben were living in the Brick House with James E. By 1920 Ben and Alice had their own property near Starbird Corner in Bowdoin. James Wagg and his wife Edna were living with James E. By 1930 James E. was living with Ben and Alice. James and Edna were in the Brick house with their children June and Merton. June and Merton spent their childhood years there. James Wagg died in 1933. In April of 1935 there was a fire that drove the family out. June moved in with Ben and Alice, staying winters with Mrs. Stetson in Litchfield while June went to Litchfield academy. In December of 1936 James E. sold the Brick House and property to Ralph Williams. It appears from the diary entries that by 1937 Everett Small was in the Brick House. By 1941 Edna was back in the Brick House. The Brick House remains standing on Wagg Rd. in Bowdoin as of July 2013. See the image.

Remarks: The parents listed here are those Ben F. listed on his certificate of marriage to Alice. The record shows that Nathan John Jones and Phoebe Ann (no last name) had a son, Benjamin F. Jones in 1850. Our Ben F. Jones was born in 1874 in Mugginsville California. I suspect that my grandfather Ben F. Jones was raised by his grandparents. Phoebe Ann would have been 44 at the time of his birth, not impossible but improbable. Something could have happened to the 1850 edition of Ben F. Jones leaving a son with the old folks. Ben F. did some prospecting for gold, worked in law enforcement in Mt. Hood, Oregon and was a traveling stock broker when he came east. After marrying Alice he added "farmer" to his list of jobs.

I have a distinct memory of on old man staggering up and down Summer St. past our house carrying three bottles. Actually he would carry 2 bottles, one in each hand, a few yards and set one of them carefully down at the edge of the road. Then he would make his way back to the place where he had previously left a bottle, pick it up and advance the pair of bottles a bit beyond the one recently set down. Back and forth he went until he was out of site. I asked mother what was wrong with that man. "That's just Doc Landry", she said. "He has had more to drink than he should have."

Since Gram's good friend Maud Randall was an Upham, it is likely that Gram knew the Marbles through Maud.

Remarks: My first girlfriend. I was 5, she was 15 - baby sitter to me and sisters. On vacation at Orr's Island, living in a large army surplus tent, I got it into my head somehow to slip out of my bed and crawl in with Marian. She moved over and I snuggled up to her and patted her back and went to sleep. In the morning she mentioned the episode to mother and Ma explained to me that I really shouldn't make a habit of that behavior.

Remarks: Horace spent the summers in which he turned 11 and 12 at his father's ranch with Alice and Ben. They took charge of him, his father being mostly absent and apparently not interested. Horace never forgot, and corresponded with Alice throughout his life. His daughter Ruth wrote Alice in 1974 thanking her for her kindness to her father. I got the letter from Doris Morrison in 2010 and tracked down Ruth in Tacoma, WA, by telephone, based on the return address on the letter. She agreed to meet our daughter Sarah who lives on Bainbridge Island near Tacoma. Sarah sent me a package of documents from Ruth documenting some of Horace's history, including a letter from Alice to Horace's wife Ida.

Remarks: For reasons I have not discovered, Warren Mills offered Ben and Alice work on his ranch near The Dalles in Oregon. Ben was born in Mugginsvlle, California and moved to Oregon as a young man. Possibly Warren was acquainted with Ben from those days. Ben was also a "comercial traveler" meaning he traveled nation-wide selling mining and other stocks. Warren was originally from Vermont. They may have met during their travels. In any event, Ben was acquainted with Warren's wife Jennie as indicated in a letter Alice sent to Horace's wife Ida in 1944. Warren maintained a residence and office in The Dalles but frequently stayed over at the ranch.

From some of these "base camps" Gram visited surrounding locales for days, or sometimes weeks, either socially or to help folks having a hard time. The diary has many references to location that are not necessarily clear to the casual reader. I have complied here a list of some place names to help sort all this out.

Movements are usually up, down or over, as in "We went down to P. Cor.". Generally up is northerly, down is southerly and over is easterly or westerly unless obvious elevation change is involved. You can get some sense of the relative geography of the neighborhood from these tidbits.

Remarks: Billy Small first showed up in the diary in 1913. He appears to be a contemporary of Jim Wagg and probably known to Alice since childhood because the dimunitive form of his name is used. I could find no record of his birth, his parents or any siblings but in 1900 there was a William F. Small, age 11 boarding with the Lendal Prout family. Alice was close friends with the Prouts so I suspect that Billy Small is that William F. Small. There are two records of his marriage on April 7, 1915, one to Margaret A. Tuttle and another to Margaret A. McDonald. Perhaps Margaret A. had a previous marriage to a Tuttle or a McDonald.
